IN THE RESEARCH:  Improving Male Pelvic Health:  Efficacy of HIFEM Muscle Stimulation for Urinary Function and Sexual Dysfunction in Men

Male urinary incontinence (UI) and erectile dysfunction (ED) have a significant impact on men’s well being.  The prevalence of UI in men over 60 has risen notably and often coincides with ED, affecting the quality of life and overall sexual health.  A study published in March 2024 in the journal Reproductive System and Sexual Disorders (Volume 13, Issue 1) assessed the safety and efficacy of High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Technology (HIFEM) in improving male urinary function and erectile dysfunction.  HIFEM, a novel non-invasive approach, targets the pelvic floor muscles, focusing on intensifying and enhancing muscular contractions beyond traditional exercise modalities.  HIFEM is the name of the patented technology used in the EMSELLA chair.

Study Findings:

  • 70% of patients experienced improvements in UI based on the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS)
  • After treatment there was a 46.2% reduction in the frequency of nighttime urination and a 38.2% increase in urinary control
  • According to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire, patients reported a 37% improvement in maintaining an erection until the completion of intercourse and a 24.2% increase in satisfaction with intercourse attempts
  • Patients reported a 10.7% increase in ejaculatory frequency and an 18.9% increase in the frequency of experiencing orgasms
  • Penile ultrasound scans showed an increase in the number and density of tissue segments after treatment, suggesting an enhancement in erectile function
